A wheelhouse officer stands watch on a ship's bridge: monitoring radar, ECDIS charts, and AIS traffic; plotting and adjusting passage plans; making collision-avoidance decisions under the COLREGs; handling radio traffic with vessel traffic services; and conning the ship during the parts that actually spike your heart rate — port approaches, pilot boardings, narrow channels, and heavy weather. Between the excitement there are long hours of vigilance, logbook entries, and checking that the autopilot is doing what you told it to.
The monitoring half of that is squarely in automation's sights. Modern bridge systems already fuse radar, AIS, and camera feeds; collision-avoidance algorithms propose maneuvers; and autonomous vessel projects in Norway, Japan, and elsewhere have run crewed-but-hands-off crossings. Track-keeping in open water is a solved problem — the autopilot genuinely does hold a course in heavy seas better than a tired human at 0300. Shore-based remote operation centers, where one operator oversees several vessels, are the industry's stated direction for short-sea routes.
Why only a 40, then? Because the ocean is the easy part. Ports, pilotage, anchoring, mechanical failures, fishing-fleet chaos, and the legal architecture of the sea all resist. International conventions still require qualified crew; insurers price uncrewed tonnage nervously; and when the gyro fails or a cargo shifts, someone aboard has to improvise. The realistic path is thinner bridge teams and duller watches: officers become exception-handlers and system supervisors, with autonomy handling routine legs. Fewer berths per fleet, but a licensed human in the loop — aboard or ashore — for a long time. Deck officers who understand the autonomous systems will supervise them; those who don't will be supervised by them.

Serious pressure builds through 2030: autonomous short-sea and ferry routes expand, bridge teams shrink, and remote operation centers take over routine legs on some trades. Deep-sea vessels keep licensed officers well beyond that, because regulation and insurance move at treaty speed. Expect fewer junior officer berths this decade, with the role tilting from active navigation to systems supervision.
Some already do on short, controlled routes, with humans supervising from shore. Deep-sea commercial shipping is another matter: international conventions, insurance, ports, and emergencies all still assume qualified crew aboard. The likelier future is smaller bridge teams supervising highly automated systems, not empty wheelhouses crossing oceans.

Officers who combine a traditional license with autonomous-systems and remote-operations training will have the strongest position — including shore jobs that didn't exist a decade ago.
The crowded, ambiguous parts: small fishing craft that ignore the COLREGs, port approaches, pilot transfers, berthing, gear failures, and weather damage requiring improvisation. Open-ocean track-keeping is essentially solved; the last miles into harbor and the first minutes of an emergency are where human judgment still earns its salary.
Get fluent in the automation you already stand watch over — know its failure modes, not just its menus. Add qualifications in remote operations, VTS, or pilotage. And keep manual skills current; the officer who can navigate when the ECDIS dies is exactly who owners will want supervising the systems that replaced everyone else.
