The job mixes physical inspection in genuinely unpleasant spaces with judgment calls that carry serious commercial and safety weight.
The data-gathering half is being mechanized enthusiastically. ROVs survey hulls in-water, sparing dry-dock costs; drones fly through cargo holds and tanks capturing imagery from spaces humans reach by rope; crawler robots take ultrasonic thickness measurements along programmed grids; and AI models flag corrosion, cracking, and coating breakdown from imagery faster and more consistently than a human eye scanning thousands of frames. Classification societies actively encourage remote and drone-assisted surveys, and continuous hull-monitoring sensors point toward surveying becoming a data stream rather than an event.
The judgment half resists on structural grounds. A survey is legally an expert's professional opinion — flag states, class societies, insurers, and courts all rely on an accountable human's attestation, and damage surveys in particular end up defended under cross-examination. Interpreting borderline findings, negotiating repair scopes with owners who'd rather not, and noticing that a crew's maintenance culture stinks are human tasks layered on top of whatever the robots collect. Drone and ROV surveys are displacing physical access now, and AI defect-detection is scaling with them through the late 2020s. By the mid-2030s expect routine surveys to be substantially remote and sensor-fed, with fewer inspectors covering more tonnage. The accountable-expert core — attestation, damage opinion, detention decisions — stays human past 2040, embedded as it is in maritime law and insurance.
The tank-crawling is, and few will mourn it. Drones, ROVs, and crawler robots increasingly gather the imagery and measurements, which means fewer surveyor-hours per vessel. But surveys are legally professional opinions — class societies, insurers, and courts require an accountable human expert. The role shifts from collecting data to judging it; headcount tightens while the surviving positions get more senior.
Still one of the best, with a caveat. Ex-engineers and deck officers remain the talent pool, and demand for experienced judgment persists. But the traditional volume of routine physical survey work is shrinking as remote inspection spreads, so aim beyond it: damage and casualty work, expert-witness capability, and fluency with drone-based survey technology are where the durable careers sit.
It already flags corrosion and cracks from imagery, often more consistently than tired human eyes. What it doesn't do is own the consequence: a detention decision, a class recommendation, or a damage opinion that ends up in arbitration needs a professional whose judgment — and liability — stands behind it. Expect AI-generated findings reviewed and signed by fewer, busier humans.
