Plastering is one of the few jobs where the disruption started before anyone said 'AI': drywall replaced wet plaster in most residential construction generations ago, shrinking the trade to a specialty. What remains splits into volume work — skim coats, stucco, rendering exteriors — and craft work: ornamental cornices, heritage restoration, Venetian polished finishes. A working plasterer's day involves mixing to the right consistency, hawk-and-trowel application in thin coats, screeding flat, and reading how fast a wall is sucking moisture out of the mix, because timing the polish is everything.

The volume half is mechanizing fast. Spray plastering rigs let one operator coat walls several times faster than hand application, with helpers just back-troweling. Machine-applied renders dominate European sites. Automated taping and finishing robots are already sanding and coating drywall joints on commercial jobs, and 3D-printed concrete construction produces walls that get a quick skim or none at all — the printed layer texture is increasingly sold as a feature. When the wall arrives pre-finished, the finisher is a line item someone deleted.

The craft half resists stubbornly. Restoration work on century-old lath-and-plaster, matching an existing ornamental profile, running a cornice in situ — this is judgment work on irregular substrates in occupied buildings, exactly the environment robots handle worst. Lime plasters behave differently by weather, wall, and batch, and heritage clients pay for hands. But craft plastering is a small market that can't absorb everyone displaced from volume work. When will it happen?

Spray rigs and finishing robots are on commercial sites now, and printed-wall construction is moving from demo projects to real developments through the late 2020s. Volume plastering hours decline steadily this decade as machine application becomes the default bid. Heritage and decorative work holds out indefinitely — there just isn't much of it.

Is plastering still worth training in?

Only with a specialty in mind. General skim-coat work is being mechanized and, in new construction, designed out entirely. But restoration plasterers and decorative-finish specialists stay booked, partly because so few people train in it anymore. If you apprentice, push toward heritage work, lime systems, or machine-application supervision rather than pure hand-finishing.

Will 3D-printed houses eliminate plasterers?

Not overnight — printed construction is still a small slice of building volume. But it points the direction: printed walls either ship with acceptable finish or get machine-smoothed as part of the printing process. Combined with spray plastering and drywall's long-standing dominance, the hand-finished wall is becoming a premium product rather than the standard one.

What plastering work is safest from automation?

Anything irregular, occupied, or old. Heritage restoration, ornamental cornice running, repairs in lived-in homes, and diagnosing damp or substrate failure all require judgment on surfaces no two of which match. Robots excel at big flat planes on empty sites; they're hopeless in a Victorian stairwell with a crumbling cornice and a homeowner watching.

How fast is machine plastering replacing hand work?

On large commercial and European residential sites, machine-applied render is already standard practice — the crew got smaller, not the market. Small domestic jobs still favor hand application because setup time for a rig isn't worth two walls. Expect the crossover point to keep moving down: rigs get cheaper, and every big contractor now prices machine-first.
