When will it happen?

Automated ultrasonic testing already displaced much manual radiography on pipeline work, and AI-assisted defect recognition is entering inspection software now. Is getting a CWI certification still worth it?

Yes, with a strategy attached. The certification remains a code requirement and a wage premium, especially in field construction, pipelines, and maintenance where conditions defeat automation. But pair it with advanced ultrasonic and data-analysis credentials, because the growth is in reviewing automated scan output, not in solo visual inspection. A CWI who can only eyeball welds is buying a shrinking role.

Which inspection work automates first?

Production-line QC in fabrication shops, where robotic welding cells add inline monitoring and the inspection merges into the process itself. Pipeline girth welds follow via automated ultrasonic testing, already standard on major projects. Slowest: field structural work, repairs, and retrofits, where access is improvised, conditions are dirty, and every joint is different. Choose your sector accordingly.

How should a working inspector future-proof this career?

Become the person the algorithms report to. Train in phased array UT, automated scanning systems, and the AI-assisted analysis software entering the market; add code endorsements across multiple standards. Inspectors who can supervise scanning crews, adjudicate machine-flagged indications, and sign with authority will consolidate the work of several traditional positions — better to hold that seat than compete with it.
