Meter installers (and the adjacent meter readers and service techs) handle the utility's last physical touchpoint with customers: setting and exchanging meters, verifying wiring and sockets, performing connects and disconnects for move-ins and non-payment, investigating tampering and energy theft, and testing meters that customers swear are lying. It's methodical outdoor work with real electrical hazard — a corroded meter socket can arc-flash — and it historically came with an enormous recurring workload: every meter read monthly, every disconnect done by hand.

Smart meters (AMI — advanced metering infrastructure) delete the recurrence. A connected meter reports usage in intervals, executes connects and disconnects remotely from the back office, flags its own outages and tamper events, and never needs a human visit for billing again. Utilities across the world have been rolling out AMI for over a decade, and the rollouts themselves created a boom of installer work — crews swapping thousands of meters a week. That's the trap: the current employment is the wave of installing the technology that removes the ongoing work. Meter reading as an occupation has already largely collapsed in AMI territories; routine service visits follow it.

What survives is the genuinely physical remainder: damaged sockets and hazardous conditions that need an actual electrician's hands, new construction services, meter testing disputes, theft investigations (which get more interesting as thieves get cleverer), and network maintenance for the AMI system itself. Rural co-ops and lagging utilities still have years of conventional territory. When will it happen?

The disruption runs on the AMI deployment schedule: territories with completed rollouts have already cut reading and routine service visits to near zero, while ongoing swap programs keep installers busy for the next several years. As the remaining utilities finish through the late 2020s, field metering forces shrink to exception crews. The installer boom and the installer bust are the same project, a few years apart.

How to stay ahead

  • 01Use the rollout years to get an electrical license or lineworker apprenticeship — the utility will still need those trades after the meters phone home.
  • 02Specialize in AMI network technology: the mesh radios, collectors, and head-end systems need field techs indefinitely.
  • 03Move toward revenue protection (theft investigation) — smart meters generate the alerts, but humans work the cases.
  • 04Position for the electrification wave: EV chargers, solar interconnections, and service upgrades are growing utility field work.

Are meter installer jobs disappearing?

In two phases. Right now there's plenty of work — utilities are mid-rollout on smart meters, and someone has to swap millions of them. But each installed smart meter permanently removes reading visits, remote connects/disconnects, and most service calls. Once a territory's deployment finishes, its field metering force shrinks sharply. Ride the wave, but plan for its end.

What happened to meter readers?

AMI largely ended the occupation in deployed territories — a meter that reports every fifteen minutes needs nobody walking a route. Some readers became installers on the swap programs (installing their own replacement, with unusual literalness), others moved into field service or left utilities. It's one of the cleanest recent examples of connectivity deleting a routine job.

What should a meter tech train toward now?

Three durable directions: a full electrical license or line trade, which utilities perpetually need; AMI network technician work maintaining the communication infrastructure the smart meters depend on; or revenue protection, where human investigation follows the meters' tamper alerts. Electrification — EV charging, solar hookups, service upgrades — is also expanding exactly as metering work contracts.

Is utility field work safe from automation overall?

The line trades are among the most automation-resistant jobs anywhere — storm restoration in a bucket truck is nobody's robotics demo. Metering is the exception because it was routine, repetitive, and information-based, which is why connectivity consumed it. The lesson inside utilities mirrors the wider economy: physical judgment work endures; scheduled routine visits die.
