In schools, churches, and offices of the mid-20th century, this person was the print shop — the sole bottleneck between a typed master and the two hundred copies the algebra class needed by third period. A good operator knew how to coax an even ink spread from a tired pad, how many copies a stencil had left before it tore, and how to keep the whole apparatus from staining everything within arm's reach. The purple-inked, solvent-scented worksheet is a genuine sensory memory for anyone schooled before the 1980s.
The occupation was destroyed in stages, and AI arrived long after the funeral. Xerographic photocopiers wiped out mimeography through the 1970s and 80s by removing the stencil step entirely. Then desktop printers atomized the copy room, and finally PDFs and email made most duplication unnecessary altogether. Each wave needed fewer humans than the last. AI's contribution is only the final indignity: now the documents write themselves, too, so even the thing being duplicated no longer requires a person.
There is nothing left to resist automation because there is nothing left, period. A handful of artists and zine-makers run restored mimeographs and Risograph machines — the Riso being the mimeograph's hip Japanese descendant — precisely because the imperfect, layered ink texture is something laser printers can't fake. That's the honest lesson this dead job teaches every living one: when a technology wave hits, the routine operation goes first, and what survives is the part people value for being visibly, texturally human.
