This was a real occupation with real machinery: the operator ran Addressograph and similar equipment that stamped names and addresses onto envelopes, catalogs, and billing forms from embossed metal plates or stencils — one plate per customer, filed in trays, maintained like a physical database. The operator loaded plate magazines, fed stock, kept the machine inked and aligned, pulled plates for address changes, and ran jobs of tens of thousands of pieces for utilities, magazines, and direct mailers. It was the mailroom's printing press, and managing the plate library was genuine records work.
Computerization deleted the job in two clean strokes. Databases replaced the plate trays — an address became a row, not an embossed rectangle of metal — and high-speed printers with mail-merge software put addresses straight onto paper without dedicated hardware or a dedicated human. By the 1990s the addressing machine was scrap metal and the operator title was gone from classifieds. The second stroke was crueler: email, e-billing, and online statements shrank physical mail itself, so even the successor jobs running inkjet addressing lines kept consolidating as volumes fell.
Today the remnant work lives inside commercial print-and-mail houses, where a handful of technicians run entire automated lines — printing, addressing, inserting, sorting — that replaced whole mailroom departments. AI touches this world mainly upstream, generating the personalized letter content and optimizing send lists, and downstream in postal sorting, where address-reading computer vision has handled handwriting for years. Nothing about the original occupation remains to defend. Our 97 is less a warning than a plaque marking where the job used to stand.

Finished decades ago. Embossed-plate addressing gave way to computer databases and laser printing through the 1980s, and by the mid-1990s mail merge had made the entire machine category obsolete. Declining mail volume since then has kept shrinking even the successor roles on automated print-and-mail lines. There is no disruption left to forecast — only the observation that the replacement technology has itself been replaced twice since.

Inside commercial print-and-mail operations, yes — technicians run automated lines that print, address, insert, and sort at speeds no manual process approached, with one person overseeing what used to occupy a department. Those roles are stable but few, and falling mail volume keeps consolidating them. The plate-and-stamp original is purely museum material.
That the operator layer dies when information goes digital. The addressing machine encoded data in metal; the moment addresses became database rows, both the machine and its human became unnecessary — no AI required. Any modern job that mostly moves information between a physical form and a system should study this one closely and update its résumé accordingly.
