As a career, no. As a temporary job while you build other skills, barely. Companies still hire for it, but headcounts shrink every year as document AI absorbs the volume. Treat any data entry position as a paid opportunity to learn the systems around it — the database, the workflow tools, the reporting — because the keying itself has no future.
The replacement is already most of the way done. OCR killed clean-document entry years ago, and modern AI now handles handwriting and messy scans that used to require humans. The last holdout is exception handling, which supports far fewer jobs. Expect the role to be functionally extinct as a standalone occupation within this decade.
The nearest exits: data quality analyst, RPA/automation specialist, database administrator's assistant, or operations coordinator. All reuse your familiarity with the data and the systems while adding judgment the machines lack. Even a few months of SQL or workflow-automation training moves you from the endangered side of the desk to the safe side.
Three reasons: legacy systems that can't talk to modern automation, businesses too small to justify software licenses, and workflows with messy inputs that still trip the models.
