Meter reading was honest, physical, weatherproof work: walk or drive a route, find the meter behind the rose bush, note the dials or scan the module, dodge the dog, log the read, repeat a few hundred times, monthly, forever. The data it produced — one number per customer per month — was the billing system's entire input, which made the reader indispensable right up until the meter learned to phone home.
Advanced metering infrastructure ended the technical argument years ago. Smart meters transmit interval data — readings every fifteen minutes, not every thirty days — directly to the utility, enabling remote connect and disconnect, instant outage detection, and time-of-use pricing that a monthly manual read could never support. Utilities aren't deploying them to save on readers, exactly; the readers are collateral. Even the transitional technology, drive-by radio reading, let one person in a van do the work of a dozen walkers, and that was the mercy phase. Deployment across North America and Europe is far along, with rural areas, gas utilities in some regions, and cash-strapped municipal systems forming the long tail.
What's left isn't reading — it's field service. Someone installs the smart meters (a boom job that ends when the swap does), investigates tamper flags and theft, verifies reads customers dispute, and maintains the network of collectors and repeaters. Those are technician roles, better paid and more skilled, and they're the standard transition path utilities themselves offer. Beyond that: gas service technician, line worker apprenticeships, substation support, or revenue-protection investigation. Utility field experience, a clean driving record, and safety credentials transfer to all of them.
