The night watchman's job description has barely changed in a century: patrol the premises on a schedule, check doors and gates, watch for fire, flood, and intruders, log the rounds, and call someone if anything happens. Modern versions add a guard tour system — tapping checkpoints to prove you walked the route — and a monitor wall of CCTV feeds. It is, at its core, a vigilance job, and vigilance is the human faculty that fails hardest at 3am.
The replacement stack is mature and cheap. AI video analytics watch every camera simultaneously and flag motion, loitering, or a person in a restricted zone — no coffee required. Remote monitoring centers cover dozens of sites with a handful of operators who can challenge intruders over loudspeakers. Door sensors, thermal cameras, and smoke detection cover the fire-and-flood half of the job. Patrol robots and drones now handle the walking at warehouses and corporate campuses, and while they're partly marketing theater, they photograph everything and never call in sick. The economics are brutal: one monitoring operator plus hardware undercuts three shifts of on-site wages.
What survives is the response function and the deterrence of an actual body. Sites with real intrusion risk want someone who can physically intervene or at least be present until police arrive; some insurance policies and regulations still require live guards; and high-touch sites — hospitals, hotels, construction sites with theft problems — value a human who can make judgment calls, de-escalate, and handle the drunk guy at the gate. Through this decade expect solitary watchman posts at low-risk sites (warehouses, office buildings, lots) to convert to camera-plus-remote-operator coverage, with surviving on-site roles concentrated where physical response or regulation demands a person.

Shift from watching to responding. Get armed or specialized certifications, apply to mobile patrol and alarm-response companies, or cross over to the remote monitoring centers doing the replacing. Security technology installation is also a natural move — the industry needs far more camera technicians than it needs eyes on monitors.
They're better than their reputation and worse than their marketing. Patrol robots reliably record everything and deter casual intrusion, but they get stuck, can't intervene, and need human backup. Their real function is extending a remote operator's reach — which still eliminates on-site posts, just less dramatically than the promo videos suggest.
