Tire repairers and changers spend their days on a physical loop: dismount, inspect, patch or plug, remount, balance, torque, next vehicle. Add TPMS sensor service, rotations, flat repairs, and — on the commercial side — roadside calls for trucks running on eleven of eighteen wheels. It's high-volume, low-margin work where shops compete on speed, and the job's skill ceiling (proper patching, sidewall judgment calls, matching duals on a semi) is real but invisible to customers.
Automation is arriving from the equipment aisle. Modern touchless tire changers do most of the dismount/mount sequence with minimal technician input, robotic tire-changing systems for passenger vehicles are moving from trade-show demo to early deployment, and drive-through concepts are explicitly designed around fewer, faster techs. Meanwhile the work itself is shrinking upstream: TPMS means fewer catastrophic flats, tire longevity keeps improving, run-flats limit repairs, and EVs — heavier, torquier — change wear patterns but not the automation logic. Chain shops with volume economics will adopt whatever cuts minutes per car, which is what pushes our score to 72.
The resistant work is everything that happens away from the rack. Commercial roadside service — a blown steer tire on an interstate shoulder — is dangerous, improvised, and decades from automation. Agricultural, OTR (off-the-road), and heavy-equipment tires are enormous, site-specific jobs requiring judgment and specialized gear. And the repair-versus-replace call on a damaged tire carries liability that shops want a trained human to own. Expect the passenger-car bay to need fewer hands per car every year, while fleet service, commercial road calls, and specialty tires keep skilled repairers busy.

The squeeze tightens through the late 2020s as robotic changers and drive-through formats spread across chain shops — passenger-car tire bays will need noticeably fewer techs per location by 2030. Repair volume also keeps shrinking as tires and TPMS improve. Commercial roadside and specialty tire service barely feels any of this and stays labor-hungry throughout, which is where the durable careers in this trade live.
Retail passenger-tire work is heading toward fewer, faster, machine-assisted positions, so as a long-term plan it's shaky. But the trade has a strong escape route: commercial and roadside tire service is chronically understaffed, pays substantially better, and won't automate for decades. Tire work is a fine entry into automotive careers — just don't let the passenger-car rack be the destination.
Early but real. Touchless changers that automate most of the mount/dismount process are standard equipment upgrades, and fully robotic tire-swap systems are in early commercial deployment aimed at high-volume shops. Adoption follows the economics of chain stores competing on speed. What no robot does yet is crawl under a loaded semi on a highway shoulder — which is why the commercial side is safe.
TIA (Tire Industry Association) certifications are the recognized standard — basic and advanced passenger, commercial truck, and OTR tracks. Commercial and earthmover certifications open the best-paying, most automation-resistant work. Adding ASE credentials in brakes and suspension turns a tire job into a general automotive career, which is the smartest hedge available from inside the bay.
They're changing the tires more than the job. EVs are heavier and deliver instant torque, so they wear tires faster — modestly good news for tire-service volume — and many use acoustic-foam-lined or specialized tires requiring updated repair procedures. The automation trajectory doesn't change: routine mounting still mechanizes, judgment calls and roadside work still don't. More volume, fewer hands per tire.
