A lockmaster runs a navigation lock: sequencing vessels in and out, operating gates and valves to raise or lower the chamber, communicating with tow captains by radio, logging traffic, and maintaining the machinery — plus handling the moments nobody automates for, like a barge string coming in hot or a recreational boater doing something creative. On big systems like the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, the Corps of Engineers runs these around the clock; smaller canal systems mix navigation with flood-control duties.
The automation story here is straightforward and well underway worldwide. Modern lock control is SCADA: sensors report levels and gate positions, PLCs sequence the machinery, and cameras plus radio let an operator run the lock from anywhere. European waterways have consolidated aggressively — corridor control centers where a handful of operators manage dozens of remote locks — and North American systems are moving the same direction as aging control gear gets replaced. What resists is complexity and consequence. High-traffic locks with heavy commercial tonnage keep on-site staff because a stuck miter gate or a snapped line can shut a national freight artery, and someone has to physically respond. Emergency response, mechanical troubleshooting, ice operations, and assisting vessels in trouble don't happen from a control room two hundred miles away. Government employment and union protection slow the transition too — attrition, not layoffs, does the shrinking. The job's future is fewer people with broader responsibility: one operator watching many chambers on screens, and mobile maintenance crews replacing the lockmaster who lived beside the gates.

Through the late 2020s expect steadily fewer on-site positions, absorbed by attrition rather than layoffs. Busy commercial locks and maintenance/emergency roles hold out longest; quiet recreational locks go remote or seasonal first.

Many low-traffic locks essentially can be, and some already run remotely or on boater-operated controls. Automation runs the routine cycles; humans remain for everything that isn't routine.
Become hard to centralize. Learn the control and SCADA systems so you're a candidate for control-room and technical roles, and stack mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic maintenance skills, because troubleshooting crews will outlast station staffing. Seniority toward high-traffic locks buys time; credentials toward dam and waterway operations buy options.
The infrastructure itself is going nowhere — barge freight is cost-effective and locks need decades of maintenance and rehabilitation. What's changing is where the humans sit: fewer operators at lock walls, more in control centers and mobile maintenance teams. If you're flexible about role and location, the field remains stable; if your plan is running one lock for thirty years, it isn't.
