The season's rhythm: dawn avalanche-control routes — assessing overnight snowpack, deploying charges to trigger slides before guests arrive — then opening terrain, marking hazards, and spending the day responding to injuries: assessing a skier crumpled against a tree, packaging them in a toboggan, and running a controlled descent to the clinic. All genuinely valuable — avalanche control has historically killed patrollers, and every remote system is one fewer dawn route where a human carries explosives across a loaded slope.

But the majority of patrol work is emergency medicine in hostile terrain, and that remains stubbornly physical: clinical assessment of an injured guest, pain management, spinal packaging on a 35-degree slope, and the strength-and-skill act of toboggan handling. Judgment calls — whether that traverse opens today, whether the light and the crowd make a hazard acceptable — carry liability resorts assign to certified humans. The occupation's genuine long-term risk is climate: shorter seasons and marginal resorts closing shrink the jobs regardless of technology. Medical first: an OEC (Outdoor Emergency Care) or EMT credential is the standard entry ticket, and paramedic-level training moves you up the list. Strong skiing on all terrain is assumed. Increasingly valuable: avalanche education (recreational then professional levels) and comfort with technology — resorts want patrollers who can run drones and remote-control systems, not just ride the routes.
