Plate finishing belonged to the era when printing plates were made by hand and camera: developing exposed plates in chemical baths, deleting spots and scratches, burning in corrections, bending and punching plates to fit a specific press, gumming them for storage, and inspecting the image under magnification before it ever touched ink. It sat at the end of a whole prepress chain — camera operators, strippers, platemakers — each a skilled trade with its own apprenticeship.
Computer-to-plate (CTP) technology deleted that chain, not gradually but almost completely. A CTP system images the plate directly from the digital file with a laser, processes it inline (or, with modern process-free plates, skips chemistry entirely), and delivers a press-ready plate with no human touch between file and press. Punching and bending are automated in the same line. There is nothing left to finish. The transition ran through the late 1990s and 2000s; today a shop that still makes plates manually is either a fine-art letterpress studio or a museum. This is one of the cleanest examples on this site of a technology not assisting a job but removing its reason to exist.
The residue is small and specific: operators who run and maintain CTP equipment (a different, smaller job), specialty platemaking for flexography — where plate mounting and finishing still involve real handwork — and heritage printing. If you hold plate-finishing skills today, the honest framing is that you hold transferable print-production knowledge, an understanding of the press-prepress interface that still has value, attached to a job title that no longer appears in listings. The disruption already ran its full course: CTP swept commercial printing between the late 1990s and roughly 2010, and process-free plates have since removed even the chemistry. The remaining timeline question is only how long flexo plate mounting and heritage letterpress niches hold out — both will keep a small amount of skilled handwork alive through the 2030s, but as tasks inside other jobs, not as a plate-finishing occupation.

Yes: flexo plate mounting and finishing for packaging printers involves genuine skill and still pays, and understanding how plates behave on press makes you a better prepress or pressroom troubleshooter. The chemistry-and-handwork parts are gone, but the judgment about registration, imaging quality, and press fit transfers.
It's the pattern to study: the technology didn't help plate finishers work faster, it connected two adjacent steps (digital file, finished plate) and made the human step between them unnecessary. Many white-collar jobs today sit in exactly that structural position — between two systems that AI is learning to connect directly.
