Running an offset press is a genuine craft. A lithographer mounts plates, mixes and keys ink, balances the ink-water emulsion, pulls makeready sheets, checks registration and color against the proof with a loupe and a densitometer, and then babysits a machine the size of a bus while it throws paper at 15,000 sheets an hour. When something drifts — dot gain creeping up, a blanket picking up hickeys, web tension going weird — the operator hears it before the instruments do. That ear took years to develop.

The problem is twofold. First, the market moved: short-run color work, the bread and butter of small commercial shops, went to digital presses that need no plates, no makeready, and roughly one operator per several machines. Second, the offset presses that remain automate the craft itself. Modern presses do closed-loop color control with inline spectrophotometers, automatic plate loading, automatic blanket washing, and preset ink keys driven straight from the prepress file. Makeready that once took an hour of skilled fiddling now takes minutes of supervised button-pressing. One operator now runs presses that used to need a crew.

Offset isn't dead — for long runs of packaging, magazines, and books, nothing beats its unit cost, and someone still has to run those presses. The mechanical troubleshooting, the feel for a particular machine's quirks, and the ability to rescue a job when the automation gets confused all still matter. But the industry needs far fewer of these people every year, the presses need less of their skill, and the apprenticeship pipeline has mostly collapsed. When will it happen?

The disruption is decades deep and still compounding. Digital printing took the short-run market through the 2000s and 2010s; press automation has been cutting crew sizes on the surviving offset work ever since. Through the rest of this decade, expect continued shop consolidation, more lights-out automation on packaging presses, and steady attrition with almost no new hiring — the trade is contracting to a small cadre of specialists at large plants.

Is offset printing a dying trade?

Dying is strong; shrinking relentlessly is accurate. Offset still dominates long-run packaging, publications, and books because its unit economics are unbeatable at volume. But digital presses took the short-run work, automation shrank press crews, and total employment has fallen for decades. The trade will exist for years — just for far fewer people, concentrated in large plants.

Can AI actually run a printing press?

Not alone, but modern presses get close. Closed-loop color systems read every sheet with inline spectrophotometers and adjust ink keys automatically; plate loading, washups, and preset makeready are push-button. The human is there for mechanical failures, materials problems, and judgment calls the automation can't make — which is real work, but work for one operator where five once stood.

What should an offset press operator retrain toward?

The shortest bridges are digital press operation, wide-format and inkjet, color management, and press/industrial maintenance. Your mechanical diagnostic skills are genuinely scarce — manufacturers of all kinds struggle to find people who can troubleshoot complex machinery. A maintenance-tech or field-service path often pays better than the pressroom did.

Why do packaging printers still hire offset operators?

Because folding cartons, labels, and flexible packaging run in volumes where offset (and flexo) crush digital on cost, and those runs need skilled supervision. Packaging is print's growth segment — e-commerce keeps feeding it — so it's where the remaining offset investment and the remaining decent jobs are concentrated.
