Tending a paper goods machine means keeping a converting line fed and flowing: loading parent rolls of tissue or board, monitoring the folder-gluer or rewinder as it turns stock into napkins, cups, boxes, or towels, watching for web breaks and glue misses, clearing jams, swapping blades, and packing off finished product. Speeds are brutal — thousands of units a minute — so the job is long stretches of monitoring punctuated by urgent minutes of intervention.
Monitoring is the first thing modern lines automated. Vision systems inspect every unit for print registration and glue placement at speeds no human eye can follow. Web-tension sensors predict breaks before they happen. Auto-splicers change parent rolls without stopping the line, robotic case packers took the pack-off station, and downtime-analytics software now tells maintenance which bearing is failing. Tissue and packaging plants have steadily cut crew sizes per line for years; WEF's Future of Jobs surveys keep listing machine-tending roles among the declining categories, and paper converting is a textbook case.
The human residue is intervention and changeover: threading a torn web through forty rollers, clearing a jam without losing a finger, executing a product changeover with new tooling, and the accumulated feel for a specific cranky machine's habits. Older converting plants — and there are many — still run on that feel. But every rebuilt line needs fewer hands, and 'tender' is evolving into one roving technician per several lines. Hence 74: the job title itself describes the thing automation eats first, and the survivors will be the ones who quietly stopped being tenders years before the org chart noticed.

Crew reductions are happening now and accelerate with every line rebuild — by 2030 expect the standard staffing model to be one multi-line technician where several tenders once stood. Older plants with legacy converting equipment move slower, but they're also the plants most likely to close outright when demand shifts. The role won't vanish by decade's end; the headcount will visibly shrink.
The tending jobs are consolidating, yes. Demand for tissue and packaging is actually fine — cardboard boxes are an e-commerce growth story — but modern lines produce more with far fewer people. Plants aren't firing en masse; they're not replacing retirements and staffing new lines lean. The industry survives; the headcount doesn't.
Full automation is further off than the fear suggests — jam-clearing and web-threading in a paper machine's guts resist robots. But partial automation is the real threat and it's continuous: each upgrade removes another task. Figure on steadily fewer positions through 2030 rather than a single cliff.
Become the person who fixes the automation. Industrial maintenance techs, especially with PLC and vision-system skills, are in genuine shortage, and your floor experience is a head start most community-college students lack. Many plants will pay for the training — take that deal before your role is the one being trained away.
As an entry point with an exit plan, yes — it pays immediately and teaches you how a plant actually runs. As a twenty-year plan, no. Use the first two years to get onto maintenance, quality, or lead-operator tracks. The tenders who stay tenders are the ones each automation project quietly counts.
