On a given rotation that means writing and briefing operational orders, allocating scarce assets, running rehearsals, handling discipline and welfare in a unit of young people under stress, liaising with allies and civilian agencies, and making decisions with incomplete intelligence and a clock running. Two distinct competencies sit underneath: staff work, which is analytical and increasingly software-supported, and leadership, which is about getting people to do dangerous things because they trust you.

Machine systems have taken over enormous amounts of the analytical layer. Intelligence fusion from satellite, signals, and drone feeds is algorithmic by necessity — no human staff can watch the volume of full-motion video collected. Logistics and maintenance forecasting, route planning, targeting support, and electronic warfare all run on automated tooling, and recent conflicts have shown loitering munitions and drone swarms shifting tactics faster than doctrine can be rewritten. The decision cycle is compressing to the point where human deliberation is itself a constraint, which is precisely the pressure point.

That pressure meets law and politics. International humanitarian law requires distinction and proportionality judgements that states are unwilling to delegate wholesale, and command responsibility presumes a commander to hold responsible. Militaries are also fundamentally about the controlled application of violence by an institution that must retain public and political legitimacy, which forecloses fully autonomous command regardless of capability. When will it happen?

Transformation through the 2030s rather than replacement. Uncrewed systems, algorithmic targeting support, and automated intelligence processing are already standard in advanced forces and will define the next decade of doctrine. Officer roles concentrated in analysis, some aircrew specialisms, and rear-area logistics shrink first. Command, small-unit leadership, and accountability functions persist as long as states want someone answerable at a tribunal — which is to say indefinitely.

Will autonomous weapons make officers unnecessary?

They make some tasks unnecessary and make command harder. Someone must set rules of engagement, authorise employment, verify targets meet legal thresholds, and answer for outcomes. Autonomy compresses the decision timeline, which raises rather than lowers the demand for well-trained judgement at the point where a human still signs off.

Which military roles face the most disruption?

Imagery and signals analysis, where volume already exceeds human capacity; routine logistics and maintenance planning; some aircrew and remotely piloted aircraft roles as autonomy improves; and administrative branches. Infantry leadership, special operations, engineering, medical, and command roles are far more durable. The overall force may shrink in headcount while growing in capability.

Is a military officer career still a solid long-term choice?

Yes, provided you choose a branch with a technological future and treat continuous learning as compulsory. Defence budgets in most Western states are rising, not falling, and the demand is for officers who can integrate autonomous and cyber capability with conventional operations. The old assumption that your skills transfer straight into a civilian sector still holds mainly for logistics, engineering, and cyber.

Can AI plan a military operation?

It can generate courses of action, model logistics, and wargame options far faster than a staff cell, and militaries are actively using such tools. What it cannot do is weigh political constraints, alliance sensitivities, and acceptable casualties — nor absorb responsibility if the plan kills the wrong people. Planning support is real; planning authority is not being delegated.
