No fielded sensor combines that sensitivity with that mobility. The handler supplies search strategy, reads a change of behaviour that may or may not be an alert, decides whether to escalate, and manages the dog's drive and fatigue. That interpretive judgement, under time pressure and public scrutiny, is the part with liability attached — and it stays with a person.

Will machines replace bomb detection dogs?

At fixed checkpoints they are already doing much of the work — CT scanners, trace detection and AI-assisted image analysis are effective and improving. Where dogs remain unmatched is mobile and wide-area screening: clearing a stadium, sweeping a car park, working freight or moving through a crowd. Nothing deployable combines that sensitivity with that mobility, so both approaches coexist.

Is being a K9 explosives handler a secure job?

Reasonably, particularly outside static screening. Demand is tied to event security, transit systems, aviation, ports and protective operations, all of which have grown. The role also requires certification and continuous training that limits supply. Career risk is more about physical demands, deployment schedules and the emotional weight of retiring a working dog than about automation.

What does the handler add beyond the dog?
