First, the physical loop is unforgiving and continuous: the material is changing viscosity every second, and correcting a piece requires force, timing and tactile feedback through a steel pipe that no current robotic system replicates outside narrow, repetitive motions. Second, the market is buying authorship — a Murano piece with a maestro's provenance is valued for who made it, which is why the trade fights so hard against counterfeit imports. Can a robot blow glass?

Machines can blow glass in the industrial sense — bottles and jars have been machine-blown for over a century at rates no human approaches. What no robot does well is the free-form hot work of a studio piece, where viscosity, gravity and timing change second by second and correction is tactile. Glass 3D printing is a different technique producing different objects, not a replacement.

Is glassblowing still a career worth entering?

It is a craft career with all that implies: long apprenticeship, low early pay, and dependence on a market that values handmade objects. The good news is that market is stable and machine-made competition has been priced in for a century. The bad news is furnace energy costs and cheap counterfeit imports, which have closed real studios in Murano and elsewhere.

How is AI actually used in glass studios?

Provenance and authorship. Buyers pay for a named maker, a documented tradition and a piece with a history, which is why trademark and origin-certification schemes matter so much in Murano. Studios that document their process, photograph their work and can prove who made what defend their price. Studios competing purely on form and price lose to imports.
