Sorting mail sounds simple until you do it at volume: reading addresses (including the ones written by doctors and toddlers), assigning each piece to the right route in the right sequence, culling damaged or unmailable items, and handling the parcels, flats, and oddly shaped things machines dislike. Plant sorters work overnight shifts around heavy, loud machinery; the job is as much machine-tending as sorting.
That's because the machines took the actual sorting long ago. OCR systems at postal facilities read the overwhelming majority of letter mail automatically — including handwritten addresses — and barcode sorters sequence letters into delivery order for each carrier's route. The few images the OCR can't crack get bounced to remote encoding centers, where humans key what the machine couldn't read; those centers have been consolidating for years as recognition accuracy climbs, a nearly pure measure of AI eating a job image by image. Parcel sorting, the growth business, is going the same way with automated conveyor systems and robotic sortation in new facilities.
