The reason dogs persist is that most fatalities involve victims without functioning beacons — backcountry travellers, road-clearance workers, people caught in-bounds. Scent detection through metres of snow is a chemical sensing problem that no deployed device solves; canine olfaction still outperforms machines for buried human scent in cold, wind-scoured, multi-layer conditions. And the alert is a behavioral signal a handler learns to read from their specific animal, over years, in ways that do not transfer. Can drones replace avalanche rescue dogs?

For victims wearing a working transceiver, drone-mounted receivers already locate beacons quickly and will take a large share of that work. For victims without a beacon — which is a substantial fraction of avalanche fatalities — there is no deployed technology that matches a dog's ability to detect human scent through metres of snow. The two are complementary.

Why are dogs still better than sensors?

Canine olfaction detects human scent diffusing through a snowpack at concentrations current portable sensors cannot reliably resolve, and the dog covers ground fast while doing it. Radar and thermal imaging struggle with depth and snow's properties. Until chemical detection improves substantially, the dog remains the most capable buried-victim sensor available.

Is avalanche dog handling a paid career?

Usually as part of a wider role — ski patroller, mountain rescue professional, gendarmerie or military mountain unit — rather than a standalone job. Many handlers are volunteers with a day job on the mountain. Demand is stable and rising with backcountry recreation, but the position is embedded in patrol and rescue services rather than advertised on its own.

How is technology changing avalanche rescue overall?

Substantially, and for the better. Better transceivers, airbags reducing burial depth, drone sweeps, RECCO detection and improved forecasting have all cut fatalities among prepared travellers. The residual cases are increasingly the unprepared and the unlucky, which is exactly the population where dogs matter most. Technology is narrowing the dog's caseload, not eliminating it.
