Use the seniority system deliberately: bid toward control-tower, yardmaster, and dispatcher tracks, or lateral into mechanical and signal crafts that automation increases demand for. Get certified on remote-control operations and any new yard technology your carrier deploys — the workers who run the automation are kept longest. And know your contract's retraining and protection clauses before you need them.
