But drones can't find a buried monument, evaluate boundary evidence, or stake a foundation to millimeter tolerance. Field crews are shrinking and re-tooling, not vanishing; the crew that remains operates the robots.

Is surveying technician still a smart career start?

Yes, if you treat it as a ladder, not a destination. The field has a genuine retirement wave and infrastructure demand, but the rod-and-note-taking tier is being automated. Enter with the goal of licensure or geospatial-technology specialization — drone operations, laser scanning, point-cloud processing. The technicians at risk are the ones whose skills stop at holding the pole.

What surveying tasks can't AI do?

The legal core. Boundary surveying is evidence evaluation — deeds, monuments, occupation lines, a century of conflicting records — and statute requires a licensed human to take responsibility for the answer. High-stakes construction stakeout also stays human because errors pour concrete in the wrong place. AI accelerates measurement and drafting; it cannot yet hold liability or dig for a pipe under a hedge.
