At amateur and rec-league level that means a paper scorebook and a flip-number board; higher up it means dedicated scoring consoles feeding league stat systems, where every rebound, fault, and substitution has to be entered in real time with the right player attribution. The failure mode everyone dreads is the disputed score — two books that disagree in the fourth quarter, with coaches leaning over the table.
The machines got here early. Tennis handed line calls to Hawk-Eye years ago and top tournaments have removed line judges entirely; cricket, soccer, and basketball run optical and chip-based tracking that captures far more than any human could write down — not just the score but velocity, spin, and player positioning, logged automatically and sold to broadcasters and betting markets. Computer vision now auto-generates box scores from a single camera at youth games. When a $200 camera on a tripod can produce a stat sheet, the person with the pencil is ceremonial.
What survives is thin but real. Leagues keep a human as the official scorer partly for liability and rules arbitration — someone has to make the judgment call on whether that was a hit or an error, and someone has to be accountable when the system glitches mid-game. Small local leagues will keep volunteers because nobody is installing tracking rigs at the middle-school gym for free. More than you'd think. Scorekeepers are good at sustained attention, fast accurate data entry, rules knowledge, and staying calm while adults yell about a rec-league basketball game. That maps well onto refereeing, sports data quality roles, live-event production, and broadcast stat support — all jobs where a human still sits between the sensors and the audience.
Rulebooks and liability. Someone accountable has to make judgment calls — was that an assist, did the clock operator err, does the protest stand — and leagues want a named official, not a vendor's algorithm, holding that responsibility. It's a real function, but it's one seat per game, not an occupation that employs many people.
