The commodity layer is under real attack. The client who just wants general muscle work has more alternatives every year, and that client was a big share of the appointment book.
What machines can't replicate is the assessment loop. A skilled therapist's hands find the fibrotic band that's actually driving the hamstring issue, adjust pressure to tissue response in real time, and connect what they feel to the athlete's training history — then change the plan mid-session. Through the 2030s expect the general-relaxation segment to keep commoditizing while clinical sports therapy holds. By 2040 the profession is smaller and more clinical — assessment-led practitioners embedded in sport and rehab, not interchangeable hands.
To part of the business, yes. Devices handle general muscle maintenance well enough for many clients, and robotic tables are arriving at prices per session humans can't match. What they don't do is find the real problem — assess movement, palpate tissue, adjust treatment in real time. Therapists competing on relaxation are exposed; those competing on clinical results aren't.
Viable, but the bar is rising. The market is splitting into commodity recovery (increasingly automated) and clinical soft-tissue work (durably human). Long-term viability means positioning on the clinical side: stronger credentials, assessment skills, relationships with teams and rehab providers, and pricing based on outcomes. The generic hour-of-massage business model is the vulnerable one.
Three moves: deepen clinical skills so your value is diagnosis and targeted treatment, not general kneading; build referral relationships with physios, coaches, and clubs who send complex cases; and co-opt the technology — prescribing devices for between-session homework makes you the director of recovery rather than its competitor. Document outcomes; results are your marketing.
