In the one-hour-photo era, a developer ran the minilab: loading film into processors, managing the chemistry (temperature, replenishment, the smell you never forgot), operating the printer, color-correcting frames by eye, and gently not mentioning that half the customer's roll was thumbs. Skilled lab technicians also did hand printing, dodging and burning, and retouching — genuine craft work that decided how people's memories looked.
Digital photography demolished the business model rather than the tasks: when photos stopped being latent images on film, there was nothing to develop. Minilabs vanished from pharmacies and malls through the 2000s. The craft tasks migrated into software — color correction became an auto-enhance button, retouching became a slider, and AI has now automated even the high-skill parts: modern phone cameras perform per-shot processing that outclasses an average lab tech, and AI tools handle noise reduction, colorization, damage repair on old scans, and portrait retouching in one click. The remaining habitat is the analog revival. Film shot by enthusiasts still needs developing, and dedicated labs — often mail-order — do real business serving that niche, alongside archival work digitizing and restoring old negatives for families and institutions. It's genuine employment, but it's a boutique trade measured in hundreds of jobs, not an industry measured in tens of thousands, and it competes on craft and trust rather than throughput. Success depends on craft reputation, fast turnaround, and community presence rather than volume. Think 'artisan trade like letterpress printing,' not 'industry with job openings.'
Color science and print production transfer well: fine-art printing studios, photo-book publishers, and museum or archive digitization programs all value people who understand color, film, and careful handling of originals. On the digital side, retouching survives at the high end of advertising and portraiture — but expect to wield the AI tools, not compete against them.
