The classic attendant job spans a few duties: staffing the booth to take payment and raise the gate, issuing and validating tickets, directing drivers to open spaces, watching for damage and dodgy behavior, and — in valet operations — actually parking the cars. In a busy urban garage it's a mix of cash handling, customer friction (lost tickets, disputed rates, broken gates), and long stretches of monitoring punctuated by the occasional fender-bender dispute that somehow becomes your problem to referee.
Nearly all of that has an installed, working replacement. License plate recognition cameras handle entry and exit with no ticket at all; apps and pay-on-foot kiosks handle payment; dynamic signage and sensors direct drivers to open spots better than a person waving; and remote monitoring centers let one employee watch twenty garages' cameras and intercoms from a desk across town. Parking operators have spent the last decade converting staffed facilities to 'gateless' or remotely-managed ones precisely because a booth salary is one of their largest costs. The technology isn't speculative — it's the default spec for any new garage.
What resists is the human-presence work. Valet parking survives because hotels and restaurants sell it as service, and because robotic valet systems remain expensive novelties. Event parking still needs people directing chaos in real time. And a visible attendant deters break-ins in ways a camera only documents. But these are fragments of the old job, not the job. The conversion is well underway: gateless, camera-run facilities are the industry default for new builds and a routine retrofit for existing garages, with remote monitoring centers replacing on-site booths. Through the rest of the 2020s expect staffed booths to become rare outside airports, events, and valet operations. This is a role in its final act at most standard facilities.
Three reasons: valet service that customers pay a premium for, event surges that overwhelm automated systems, and security presence in facilities with theft or vandalism problems. There's also plain inertia — retrofitting an old garage costs money up front, even when it saves on wages. But each renovation cycle converts more facilities to camera-and-app operation.
The booth job, essentially yes — license plate recognition and mobile payment have made it optional, and operators treat attendant wages as a cost to engineer away. Valet and event parking will persist much longer because they're service and crowd-management work, not transaction processing. If you're in a booth today, assume the facility's next equipment upgrade doesn't include one.
The natural neighbors are security guard work, hotel front-of-house, fleet or transportation coordination, and — underrated — parking equipment field technician, since someone has to install and fix all those gates and cameras. Operators running remote monitoring centers also recruit from attendant ranks because they already know the disputes and failure modes.
Automated parking systems that shuttle cars into racks exist and a few luxury developments use them, but they're expensive, slow at peak times, and terrifying to insurers. Human valet survives because it's cheap by comparison and doubles as hospitality. Self-parking features in cars are a bigger long-term threat to valet than robots in garages are.
