The profession is athletic and itinerant. Years of technical training to produce a voice that carries over an orchestra without amplification, then a career of learning roles in multiple languages, auditioning constantly, travelling between houses, and managing an instrument that is affected by sleep, illness, air travel and stress. Rehearsal means staging with a director, musical calls with a conductor, coaching for language and style, and eventually performances where there is no second take and a cancelled singer means a house scrambling for a cover.
Synthetic voice has advanced remarkably, and its impact is real in the recording economy. Session singing, demo tracks, film and game vocals, and choral padding are all subject to synthesis or library substitution, which removes income streams that supported many classical singers between engagements. Vocal cloning raises live questions about likeness rights for singers with recorded catalogues. Meanwhile, AI is reshaping the industry's back office: audition triage from submitted video, repertoire and casting suggestions, translation and coaching apps for language work, and marketing.
Live opera resists for physical and cultural reasons. The technique exists specifically to fill an acoustic space without electronics, and audiences attend for the somatic experience of that sound in a room, alongside the visible risk of a performance that could fail. There is no robotic body with a resonating human vocal tract, and a speaker playing a synthesised aria is a categorically different product. Live performance remains secure past 2040. The art form's real jeopardy over that period is funding cuts, ageing audiences and house closures — economic questions to which AI is close to irrelevant.
It can produce recordings that fool casual listeners, and synthesis is already displacing session and media vocal work. In a house, the product is different: an unamplified human voice filling a hall, with the audible risk of failure. That physical event is what tickets are for, and a speaker cannot deliver it whatever the fidelity.

AI has removed some ancillary recording income that helped singers between contracts, which matters more than it sounds for people at the middle of the profession.
Treat rights literacy as a professional skill — know what you are signing regarding voice, likeness and training data. Build a personal audience through concerts and online presence, because casting increasingly weighs draw. And keep the technical foundation ruthless, since the live, unamplified capability is the entire thing that cannot be synthesised.
