Mahout work is unglamorous, constant and physical. It means feeding an animal that consumes well over a hundred kilos of vegetation daily, bathing and inspecting skin and feet, monitoring for foot abscesses and colic, managing musth in bulls — a dangerous hormonal period that kills handlers every year — administering medication, and maintaining the behavioural relationship through consistent daily contact. In tourism and sanctuary settings there is also guest interaction, education, and increasingly the work of transitioning animals from riding operations to observation-based models.
Technology has meaningfully entered elephant management. GPS collars and geofencing track wild and semi-captive herds and trigger early warnings for human-elephant conflict; acoustic and thermal sensors detect crop-raiding elephants before they reach villages; camera-based systems on railway lines have reduced elephant strikes; health-monitoring wearables and thermal imaging assist in early detection of illness. Machine learning helps identify individual animals from ear and tusk patterns. Conflict-mitigation software has genuinely reduced deaths on both sides in parts of India and Sri Lanka, and it is a growing part of the ecosystem the mahout works within.
Where it stops is the animal itself. Elephants form specific attachments, respond differently to different handlers, and can become dangerous when that relationship breaks down — handler deaths are a persistent occupational reality. Reading a subtle change in posture or eye that precedes an incident is pattern recognition built over decades with one animal. Physical care requires hands. The ethical transition underway in the industry — away from riding, toward sanctuary and welfare-led models — actually increases skilled handler demand per animal, since observation-based care is more labour intensive. The real pressures on this occupation are economic and ethical: tourism collapse hits mahout livelihoods hard, and captive elephant populations are declining. Automation barely registers.

Nothing on the horizon threatens the role. Sensor-based conflict mitigation and health monitoring expand through the 2030s and make both elephants and handlers safer. The forces that will actually determine how many mahouts exist by 2040 are tourism economics, captive population decline, and the ethical shift toward sanctuary models — which tends to raise the handler-to-elephant ratio. This is resilient work in a shrinking but not vanishing sector.
It can supplement it. Collars, thermal cameras and acoustic sensors track elephants, detect illness signals and warn villages of approaching herds. What they cannot do is feed, bathe, medicate or safely handle a specific animal that has bonded to a specific person. Elephants distinguish individual humans and respond accordingly — that relationship is the actual job, and it is not transferable to hardware.
It is viable but under economic strain. Captive elephant numbers are falling, riding tourism is being phased out on welfare grounds, and tourism downturns devastate handler income overnight. The growth is in sanctuary, conservation and conflict-mitigation work, which values husbandry and welfare knowledge more highly. Automation is the least of the profession's concerns.

Learn the monitoring technology; projects need field staff who can operate collars and interpret alerts. Add education and guest-interaction skills, because ethical tourism sells expertise rather than rides.
