The craft skills are real: picking, impressioning, decoding a master system, and knowing every manufacturer's quirks. The business is local, reputation-driven, and already fighting scammy lead-generation networks that poisoned its search results years ago.
The mechanical core is being replaced at the product level. Smart locks with codes, phones, and remote management eliminate rekeying — a landlord changes a tenant's access from an app instead of paying for a cylinder swap. Keyless vehicles are removing the automotive locksmith's bread and butter as dealer-programmed fobs and phone-as-key spread. Self-service key-cutting kiosks took the duplication trade. Property managers increasingly run cloud access-control platforms where 'give the plumber access Tuesday 9-11' is a dropdown, not a service call. But someone has to install, network, and fix all of it, and that someone is winning. Lockouts don't vanish either; people lock themselves out of smart homes with dead batteries and forgotten codes in impressively novel ways. The trade's future is the locksmith-turned-security-integrator: low-voltage wiring, networking, door hardware, and yes, still a pick set in the van for the 1950s mortise lock that outlived three generations of technology.

But the same transition is generating installation and integration demand faster than the industry can hire. The next five years decide which side of the trade each locksmith lands on.
They make the old business model obsolete, not the trade. Key cutting and rekeying volume is falling as smart locks spread, but every one of those locks needs installation, configuration, troubleshooting, and rescue when the battery dies or the firmware misbehaves. Locksmiths who add electronic-security skills are busier than ever; those who only service mechanical cylinders are watching their market age out.
For now, yes — transponder keys and fob programming for the existing vehicle fleet remain lucrative, and dealers' high prices leave room for independents. But the trajectory is clear: phone-as-key and dealer-locked digital systems are shrinking the addressable work with each model year. Treat automotive as a strong current business with a fading future, and diversify before the fleet turns over.
Electronic access control above all: installation and programming of commercial systems, smart-lock platforms, and the low-voltage wiring and networking underneath them. Door hardware and code compliance (fire egress, ADA) for commercial work is a durable, regulated niche. Safe work remains a respected specialty with little automation risk. The pattern: move from serving keys to serving systems.
Never — they'll just get locked out in new ways. Dead smart-lock batteries, forgotten codes, glitched firmware, lost phones, and the classic slammed door all still generate emergency calls, and someone with tools and judgment still has to open the door non-destructively. Lockout work survives every technology transition; it's the routine key-and-cylinder work that's disappearing.
