The holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property spends most of the year doing the craft itself: throwing and glazing pots at a kiln whose firing schedule is measured in days of watching flame colour, dyeing and weaving a bolt of cloth by a technique with a dozen preparatory steps, forging a blade, carving a Noh mask, or performing Bunraku and Kabuki roles honed since childhood. Alongside that sits the obligation the designation carries: training successors, participating in public demonstrations, documenting method for the cultural agency, and keeping alive the supply chains of lacquer, mulberry paper, specific clays and pigments that the work depends on.

Automation has already reshaped the market around these crafts, which is the real pressure. Industrially printed textiles imitate hand-dyed patterns, CNC and 3D printing reproduce carved forms, and generative image tools produce endless pastiche of traditional motifs for merchandising. That collapses the commercial mid-market a master's students used to survive in, and it makes provenance the entire value proposition. Digital tools also assist genuinely: high-resolution scanning records a masterwork, motion capture preserves a performer's timing, and archives make historic pieces studyable in ways that were impossible a generation ago.

What cannot be automated is the thing being designated. The award recognises a person's embodied mastery and their capacity to transmit it, which is a claim about a body, a lineage and decades of correction under a teacher. The judgement of when a glaze is right, when a firing is done, when a line in a performance lands, is developed through failure at a scale no dataset captures, and much of it is unarticulated even by the master. Successor training is face-to-face and slow for exactly that reason. The economics around it are already strained and will tighten through the 2030s as machine-made imitation gets cheaper and more convincing, squeezing the working craftspeople below master level who never receive a stipend. The genuine crisis in these traditions is demographic: too few apprentices willing to spend a decade before earning properly, and vanishing suppliers of specialist materials. Neither problem is caused or solved by AI.

Succession and supply. Crafts die when nobody spends the decade required to learn them and when the last maker of a specific brush, clay or lacquer closes. Public stipends help, but the pipeline depends on making apprenticeship survivable financially. Compared with that, generative imitation is an irritation rather than an existential threat.
