A keypunch operator turned data into holes. Working from handwritten source documents — payroll sheets, inventory counts, survey forms — they typed on an IBM 029 or similar machine that punched patterns into 80-column cards, one card per record, thousands of cards per shift. A second operator often re-keyed everything on a verifier to catch errors, because a mispunched card meant a corrupted batch job at 2 a.m. Entire floors of (mostly women) operators were the input layer of early computing: no punched cards, no payroll run.
The occupation was consumed by its own industry in a single generation. Key-to-tape and key-to-disk systems removed the physical card in the late 1960s; video terminals in the 1970s let clerks enter data directly into the system, collapsing the specialized punch room into ordinary office typing. By the mid-1980s the card era was over, and the census category quietly dissolved into 'data entry keyer' — a job that, as this site's own listings note, is now itself at 99% risk. The keypunch operator's successor is dying of the same disease that killed the original.
Why feature a job that predeceased the microwave oven? Because it's the purest demonstration that technology industries automate their own workers first and fastest. These operators worked at the white-hot center of the computer revolution and were erased by it before almost anyone else — proximity to the machine was zero protection. The residue today: a handful of hobbyist restorations, vintage computing museums, and legacy data-conversion projects reading old card archives. Our 98 is, frankly, generous to a ghost.

Concluded roughly forty years ago. The role peaked in the 1960s, when data processing departments employed floors of operators, and was gone by the mid-1980s as terminals made direct entry universal. Total arc from essential to extinct: about twenty-five years. It remains the tech industry's founding reminder that the jobs closest to a transformative machine are often the first ones the machine's next version deletes.
They converted written information into punched holes on 80-column cards that early computers could read — typing on specialized machines like the IBM 029, producing thousands of cards per shift, with a verification pass to catch errors. Through the 1950s-70s they were the entire input layer of corporate computing: payroll, billing, inventory, and census data all entered the machine through their hands.

Key-to-disk systems and then video terminals let data go straight into the computer, making the punched card — and the specialized room of people producing it — unnecessary. The computer industry effectively automated its own front door. The occupational category merged into general data entry, which is now facing its own extinction.
Many transitioned into terminal-based data entry, computer operations, or general clerical work — the skills mapped reasonably well, and the transition took long enough that attrition absorbed much of it. The ones who moved toward the replacing technology early fared best, a pattern that has repeated in every automation wave since and is worth memorizing now.
Because it's the control group. Keypunch operators prove that working inside the hottest technology sector confers no immunity — computing eliminated its own essential workers first. Every argument now made for why AI-adjacent jobs are safe ('the machines need us to feed them') was equally true of keypunch, right up until the machines got a better feeding mechanism.
