The technical core is deceptively hard. Hair has wildly variable density, texture, growth patterns, cowlicks, and a scalp shape that determines how a cut falls, and a stylist adjusts continuously as the hair dries and reveals what it actually does. Even setting the engineering aside, the insurance and regulatory case is brutal. This is the sort of task robotics researchers use as an example of what remains hard.

The realistic pressures are economic — recession-sensitive spending, high-street rents, and chair-rent models that shift risk onto stylists — plus the physical toll on hands, back, and shoulders. Build a loyal client base and manage your body, and the work is durable.

Booking platforms with automated reminders reduce no-shows, AI-generated content fills social feeds, virtual try-on tools help clients commit to bigger colour services, and stock systems cut waste. Some colour brands offer formulation assistance. None of it touches the cutting; all of it changes how full your column is and how much you earn per client.
Technical range first — cutting across hair types, especially textured and curly hair, plus colour correction — because those command premiums and referrals. Then business skills: pricing, retention, and marketing yourself independently of any salon. Finally, consultation ability, since most client dissatisfaction comes from a mismatch agreed before the scissors ever moved.
