Glaziers cut, handle, and set glass: storefronts, curtain-wall panels on high-rises, shower enclosures, mirrors, replacement windows, the occasional aquarium. The job mixes real skill — measuring to the millimeter, because glass doesn't forgive — with brutal material handling; a commercial insulated unit can weigh several hundred pounds and one wrong move costs the panel or a hand. Commercial work means swing stages and cranes; residential means ladders, trim, and customers watching.
Two forces drive our 72. First, prefabrication: curtain-wall systems increasingly arrive as factory-glazed unitized panels, meaning the glass was set by machine in a plant and the site crew just hangs modules. The factory side — CNC cutting, edging, robotic handling and setting — is heavily automated already. Second, on-site robotics: vacuum-lifter manipulators and glazing robots now place panels that once took four glaziers and a prayer, and contractors love them because glass handling injuries are expensive. Each machine doesn't eliminate the trade; it turns a four-person lift into a one-operator job.
What resists is the irregular remainder. Replacement and repair work in occupied buildings, historic-window restoration, custom shower enclosures scribed to out-of-plumb walls, emergency board-ups after a break-in — all of it requires judgment, improvisation, and fitting glass to buildings that were never square. Field measurement in old structures is a craft in itself. So the likely path isn't extinction but concentration: fewer glaziers, more of them operating lifting equipment or doing skilled service work, and a shrinking market for the strong-back-and-suction-cups role that filled out commercial crews.

The commercial side feels it first and is feeling it now: unitized prefab and glazing robots are shrinking site crews on new construction, with steady adoption through the late 2020s as lifting equipment gets cheaper than injury claims. By around 2030 expect big-panel installation to be machine-assisted by default. Service, replacement, and custom residential work degrade much more slowly and will still want human hands well past that.
Middling. Construction demand keeps glaziers busy today, and repair and custom work will always need humans. But the commercial installation side — historically where crews were biggest — is being cut down by factory-glazed panels and robotic lifters. Security depends on your lane: service and custom glaziers are fine; general labor on big-panel crews is exposed.
They already are. Vacuum-lift manipulators and glazing robots set heavy panels on commercial projects today, mainly because manual glass handling is one of construction's more expensive injury categories. Adoption widens through this decade as equipment costs fall. What lags for a long time is anything irregular — old buildings, custom openings, occupied-space repairs.
Three moves: learn to operate the lifting and setting equipment rather than compete with it, develop the finesse work (field measuring, scribing, custom showers, restoration) that machines can't do, and get comfortable with service calls. The glazier who can diagnose a leaking curtain wall or replace a unit in a working office building has work for decades.
It shifts them rather than kills them outright. Unitized curtain walls move glazing labor from the site into factories, where robots do the setting — so the site job becomes hanging modules with smaller crews. That means fewer traditional field-glazing positions on new commercial builds, offset partly by factory and installation-supervision roles. Total headcount shrinks; the surviving jobs change shape.
