The flight engineer's panel was once the busiest station on the flight deck: managing fuel transfer between tanks, monitoring engine temperatures and pressures, running hydraulic and electrical systems, and working checklists while the pilots flew. On a 707 or early 747, that third crew member was mandatory. Then came the glass cockpit. The 747-400, the 757, the MD-11 — each generation moved systems monitoring into computers that watch every parameter continuously and alert the pilots only when something drifts out of limits.
The remaining work exists in pockets: cargo operators flying vintage freighters, aerial firefighting tankers, some military airframes, and heritage aircraft. Those seats survive because recertifying an old aircraft for two-crew operation costs more than paying a flight engineer — an economic quirk, not a technological one. What 'resists' here is really a career pathway rather than a job. The disruption isn't coming — it came, roughly between 1985 and 2005, when glass cockpits made the third seat redundant. What's left is a slow fade: the vintage freighters, tankers, and military airframes that still require the position retire a few at a time. By the early 2030s, flight engineer will be less a career than a historical rating, with the survivors aging out alongside their aircraft.

As a destination, no — as a doorway, occasionally. A few cargo and firefighting operators still hire and train for the panel, and that experience plus flight time can lead to pilot seats. But building a career plan around a position the industry eliminated decades ago is not a strategy; it's nostalgia with a type rating.
That's the live debate. Manufacturers have studied reduced-crew and single-pilot cargo operations, and the flight engineer precedent shows regulators will eventually accept automation replacing a crew member if the safety case holds. Passenger acceptance and union resistance make it slow, but 'the automation takes a seat' has happened before.
