Most of a master falconer's day is unglamorous animal husbandry. Weighing the bird each morning to a fraction of an ounce, reading crop condition and mutes for early signs of aspergillosis, imping a broken deck feather, checking jesses and swivels for wear, manning a new bird through weeks of patient desensitisation. Then there is the commercial side: bird abatement contracts at landfills, vineyards and airfields, falconry experiences for tourists, breeding projects, and the permit and inspection regime that governs every one of those activities.
Automation has already colonised the measurable parts. GPS-GSM telemetry replaced radio tracking and now logs flight paths, altitude and stoop speed automatically. Digital scales feed weight-management apps. Drone-based bird deterrence competes directly with abatement falconry at some sites, and lasers and acoustic systems undercut the price. Client booking, insurance, permit renewals and the record-keeping that wildlife agencies demand are all going to plain software. If the job were only 'remove gulls from this site', drones would already have won on cost.
What holds is judgement about an animal that cannot be commanded. Deciding whether a hawk is one ounce too heavy to fly keen or one ounce from being unsafe, reading the difference between sulking and sickness, calling off a flight because the wind and a distant treeline mean a lost bird, calming a raptor that has bound to a rabbit in a hedge — these are embodied, high-stakes, irreversible calls made in seconds. Add the deep licensing structure and apprenticeship requirements and you get a profession that shrinks or grows on cultural demand, not on compute. Nothing dramatic is coming. Drone and laser deterrence will keep chewing at commercial abatement contracts through the late 2020s, which is where the money is, and the paperwork burden will quietly shrink as agencies digitise. The hunting, breeding and experience sides look stable well past 2040. The realistic threat to falconry over that horizon is habitat loss, quarry decline and licensing politics, not any software.
Partly, and they already do at some sites. Drones are cheaper to run and never get lost. But gulls and starlings habituate to drones within weeks, while a live raptor triggers an unlearnable predator response. Most sophisticated operators now blend both, which means falconers who can also fly a drone keep the contract instead of losing it.
It was barely a full-time career before AI, and that has not changed. Most masters combine abatement work, guest experiences, breeding and education. AI does not threaten any of those income streams directly; it mostly removes admin. The binding constraints stay what they always were — licensing, land access and the number of people willing to pay.
Automated feeding and weight logging already assist training, and telemetry analytics can flag when a bird is flying below form. But manning a raptor is a trust-building process with an animal that reads posture, tone and hesitation. There is no actuator that can offer a fist and mean it, and no economic reason to build one.
