Pest control work is equal parts biology, plumbing-crawlspace athletics, and customer therapy. A tech's day runs through inspections — flashlight and moisture meter in attics, crawlspaces, and restaurant kitchens — identifying the pest and the conditions feeding it, applying targeted treatments, setting and checking traps and bait stations, sealing entry points, and documenting everything for the customer and, on commercial accounts, for the health inspector. Recurring service routes are the industry's economic engine: monthly and quarterly visits, many of which amount to checking stations that haven't changed.
Those checking visits are exactly what's automating. Networked rodent traps and bait stations now report activity remotely, so a route that required a human eyeball on forty stations becomes an exception report. Acoustic and thermal sensors detect termites, rodents in walls, and bed bugs earlier than a visual inspection; AI image tools identify species from a customer's photo before anyone is dispatched. Commercial clients — food plants, warehouses — are adopting continuous digital monitoring because auditors love time-stamped data. The result thins the routine middle of the job: fewer windshield hours checking empty traps, more targeted responses to real activity. That route compression is the bulk of our 63.
The dirty end of the job is secure. Nobody has built a robot that crawls a two-foot-high crawlspace, finds the sill-plate gap, treats the subterranean termite colony, and seals the entry — while reassuring a homeowner on the edge of panic. Exclusion work, wildlife removal, fumigation, and bed-bug remediation are physical, variable, and licensed. Regulation helps too: pesticide application requires certified humans in every state. The techs at risk are the ones whose value was driving the route; the ones who inspect, solve, and seal will be busy indefinitely.

Commercial accounts are converting to remote-monitored stations now — auditors prefer the data trail — and residential smart traps follow as prices drop. By around 2030, expect the monitoring-route business model to be substantially transformed, with techs dispatched to verified activity rather than driving scheduled loops. Hands-on treatment, exclusion, and inspection demand stays solid; the industry sheds windshield hours, not exterminators, though headcount per branch drifts down.
The work is stable; the business model is shifting. Pests aren't going anywhere — warming climates are expanding ranges — and regulated treatment plus physical exclusion requires certified humans. What's shrinking is routine route work as smart traps report remotely. Techs who can inspect, treat, and seal will stay in demand; trap-checkers on scheduled loops are the exposed group.
They replace the empty visits. Connected rodent stations report activity continuously, so instead of a tech checking forty quiet stations monthly, one gets dispatched when something triggers. That's genuinely fewer service stops — but every trigger still needs a human to investigate the source, treat, and fix the entry point. Monitoring automates; remediation doesn't.
Structural knowledge tops the list — understanding how buildings admit pests and how to seal them is carpentry-adjacent work no sensor performs. Termite expertise, fumigation licenses, and wildlife handling all command premiums. Add fluency with digital monitoring dashboards, because commercial clients increasingly buy data-backed programs, and someone has to translate sensor alerts into action.
Partially, already: photo-identification tools name the species, and sensors flag activity in walls before visible signs. But diagnosis is only step one. Finding the nest, the moisture source, and the entry route through a real building — then deciding on treatment that's legal, safe, and effective — still takes a certified human in the crawlspace. AI shortens the hunt; it doesn't finish it.
