The safety role is the core — recognizing a stressed diver before panic, managing currents, handling the emergency ascent that goes wrong.
Technology has claimed the adjacent territory rather than the job itself. ROVs and underwater drones now do the commercial inspection, survey, and deep scientific work that once required working divers — hull inspections, pipeline surveys, deep reef monitoring — without decompression risk. Inside recreation, automation nibbles at the edges: air-integrated computers and GPS trackers automate monitoring, e-learning replaced classroom theory, and booking and briefing content is increasingly digital. The occupation's genuine vulnerabilities are ecological and economic rather than technological: reef degradation, climate pressure on dive destinations, and the seasonal, low-wage structure of resort work. It trims desk work and paperwork hours. Underwater, the stack stops — supervision, rescue readiness, and reading a diver's stress remain entirely human responsibilities.
