The work is physical, precise, and dirty in ways that resist a robot's tidy world.

Photo-based damage estimating — insurers' apps that assess a crash from your phone pictures — now writes preliminary estimates that once required an experienced appraiser's eye, and increasingly decides total-loss calls before a human looks. 3D scanning verifies frame dimensions against factory spec. By 2030 expect fewer estimator roles, more calibration and EV-certified positions, and a persistent shortage of skilled hands that keeps wages firm.

Electronics and certification. ADAS calibration is now part of routine repairs and shops bill it separately; EV high-voltage safety credentials open work most techs can't touch; OEM certifications route premium repairs to you. Traditional skills still matter — welding, structural repair, paint — but the tech who pairs them with calibration and EV capability is the one every shop is hunting.
